A Devilish Slumber Chapter One
Midnight,
Wednesday, April 8, 1813, London, England
A SCREAM RIPPLED
across the misty, dockside air.
Sir Phillip
Jones's pulse lurched at that mournful cry. Gripping his walking stick, he
raced down the hilly road of the deserted warehouse district in Wapping. A
second muffled scream rang out and was then abruptly cut off. No longer
concerned about keeping his movements covert, he ran toward those terrified
shrieks. Rounding a corner, he tore past a man staring toward where the screams
had come from.
"Imbecile,"
the large man grumbled from behind him.
Phillip was ten
feet away before it registered that the man had sworn in French. By then, the
woman who ran out of a warehouse gripping a bloody dagger had captured his
focus. For a split second, her face was clearly highlighted by a stray shaft of
moonlight piercing the mist. He stumbled to a halt, his chest heaving for air
as stunned recognition sank in.
Rose?
The lady started
and swung toward him. Had he spoken aloud? Pulling her hood up, she then
sprinted off into the night.
Phillip
instantly gave chase, but when he reached the open warehouse door through which
she had fled, he pulled back. If that had been his Rose, he knew where she
lived.
Rapidly
retreating footsteps behind him suggested the irate Frenchman, probably a
sailor, was also prudently withdrawing from this possible crime scene.
Inside the
warehouse, despite the wide open door, it was pitch black, but that coppery
scent of fresh spilled blood was unmistakable in the chilly sea air. Instead of
blindly stepping in, Phillip pulled out his candle and circular silver
tinderbox from his pocket. He had not survived the dangers of being an
intelligence officer for the past five years by acting foolishly during a
crisis.

Where are you from?
Hi,
my name is Shereen Vedam and I was born in Ceylon, now known as Sri Lanka, but
I now live on Vancouver Island, in the West Coast of Canada.
Tell us your latest news?
I
have a 3 book fairytale-inspired Regency fantasy romance series called The Rue Alliance being released this
spring by ImaJinn Books, an imprint of Belle Books. The first Rue Alliance book
out of the gate was A Devilish Slumber,
released February 19, 2015. The next up will be A Scorching Dilemma, due to be released at the end of April, and
the last will be A Perfect Curse,
set for a June release.
When did you first consider yourself a
writer?
The
day my first short story (Dragon Dreams) was published in an anthology called Cat
Tales. The editor actually reamed me out for not admitting in my cover
letter that I once worked in a veterinary hospital. He said he guessed that I
knew how a vet hospital functioned and he considered it an amateur mistake to
leave out that detail in the letter. Goes to show, always include pertinent
details that relate to a story in your cover letter!
What inspired you to write your first
book?
My
first book hasn’t sold yet. It’s a children’s fantasy called Heir To The
Kingdom. I was working as a receptionist at the time and it was either putter
around with a fictional story or read a dry company manual on how a copy
machine works. I picked a realm with dragons and wizards over instructions on
how to load cartridges and clear paper jams.
If you had to choose, which writer would
you consider a mentor?
Terry
Pratchett. That’s actually an odd author to pick as a mentor, since I’ve never
met him and I only began reading his books a few years ago, after I was a
finalist in one of his contests. A friend of mine, a huge Pratchett fan, heard
the news about the contest results, and insisted on giving me a Terry Pratchett
book to read. She said I absolutely had to read it. The book was called, Wyrd
Sisters. I love most fantasy novels and had come across Pratchett’s name now
and then but had thought I would not enjoy his stories. They sounded too odd,
even for me. But after reading that book, I was completely hooked on his
writing. He is now, without a doubt, one of my faves. I consider him a mentor
because his stories remind me of fantasy characters who pop up in my stories. In
some way, reading his books makes me feel less of oddling. May he rest in
peace.
What book are you reading now?
It’s
a mystery/thriller written by a friend. Covert Danger by Jo-Ann Carson. Heard
it was excellent and I love mysteries, so I’m looking forward to immersing
myself in it.
Are there any new authors that have
grasped your interest?
I
love reading Martha Wells’ fantasy novels as well as Hilari Bell’s Young Adult books.
What are your current projects?
I’m
working on another 3-book Regency fantasy romance series. The first two in this
new series are completed, and I’m about ½ way through the last book. While my
Rue Alliance books were inspired by well-known fairytales, my next series are my
very own fairytales romances. The first book is called The Coven At Callington, and it was the one that was a finalist in
the Terry Pratchett, Any Where But Here,
Any When But Now contest. The next series are alternate- history Regency
romances, and pure fantasy.
What would you like my readers to know?
My
two loves in writing and reading are fantasy and Regency. I approach both with
equal passion, showing deep respect for world building in Fantasy and
historical accuracy in Regency. So that’s exactly what you’re likely to find in
my stories. Tales that will stretch your imagination, while grounding you in glorious
facts.
