ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Jennie K. Brown is a high school English teacher by day,
freelance magazine writer by night, and middlegrade/young adult author by
late-night and weekend. When she isn’t teaching or writing, Jennie can be found
reading a good book, traveling, or spending time with her awesome husband,
amazing son and super-spoiled yorkie.In 2010, the National Council of Teachers
of English (NCTE) named Jennie the Pennsylvania English teacher of excellence,
and she currently serves as President of the Pennsylvania Council for Teachers
of English and Language Arts (PCTELA). She is also an active member of SCBWI,
NCTE and ALAN.
I first knew I wanted to
be a writer when I was in about fifth grade! I loved writing scary stories
(inspired by Scary Stories to Tell in the
Dark), and won a Halloween scary story writing competition.

How long does it take
you to write a book?I would say that
ranges anywhere from a few months to get through a first draft to a year just
getting into decent shape!

What is your work
schedule like when you're writing?I
write fast and work hard. Because I’m a full-time English teacher, when I get a
sliver of time to write, I need to use the time wisely.

What would you say is
your interesting writing quirk?Hmmm …
this is a tough one. I always have to have a drink in hand. Cappuccino or wine.
5.
How do books get published?It would take me pages to answer this
question, and there is a ton of great resources on this topic. Someone writes a
great book, gets an agent, and then gets a contract! That is the dream
situation.

Where do you get your
information or ideas for your books?Typically,
my ideas are inspired by life experiences.

When did you write your
first book and how old were you?Poppy
Mayberry, The Monday was my first full novel, and I started writing it when I
was 27.

What do you like to do
when you're not writing?I enjoy spending
time with my family and reading.

What does your family
think of your writing?They are all
super, duper supportive!

What was one of the most
surprising things you learned in creating your books?How many revisions a book goes through before publication. SOOOO many!
But SOOOO worth it.

How many books have you
written? Which is your favorite?I’ve now
written five books! Because each book comes from such a special place in my
heart, I really can’t narrow it down to one!

Do you have any suggestions
to help me become a better writer? If so, what are they?My biggest piece of advice for writers is to be readers! Read, read,
read.

Do you hear from your
readers much? What kinds of things do they say?I do! I’ve had a number of readers express their love for Poppy and
Pickle – her adorable yorkie. I’ve even had a few readers dress up as Poppy for
school character days and for Halloween!

Do you like to create
books for adults?I haven’t attempted
adult fictions --- but maybe one day!
15.
What do you think makes
a good story? An engaging plot,
memorable characters, and a touch of mystery --- I think it’s a personal thing!

As a child, what did you
want to do when you grew up?As a kid, I
wanted to be a news anchor!
